The Youth Hostel Schierke received the certificate National Park-Youth Hostel

On a peaceful ledge right above the town of Schierke, on the edge of the Harz National Park, you can simply relax or take in the culture of the area’s towns.   Our hostel, with its newly renovated large gymnasium, two new bowling lanes, seminar rooms and 4- bed rooms, is ideally suited for families, school groups, seminars, and sports groups.

With the construction of the wall in 1961 and the lock-down on East-West German traffic, the hostel, formerly named after Alexander Matrossow, a Soviet military hero in WWII, was closed and appropriated by the East German National Army. The house even acquired its own helicopter landing pad. But it was torn down in the same decade and replaced with a military recreation center. On June 26, 1999, the town of Schierke once again welcomed a hostel, built on the same grounds where the Alexander Matrossow Hostel once stood.
